If you've been writing HTML with only a text editor, using an HTML editor for the first time can be a real revelation. Editors, designed specifically for HTML authoring, come in many flavors and I encourage you to try out as many as you can. Just remember: it's another piece of software that you must LEARN how to use. So, having said that, here are my recommendations (for both Mac and Windows) listed in order of preference:

Windows HTML Editors:

  1. HTML-Kit
Highly recommended free HTML/XHTML editor that has all the features one could want including editing, validating, previewing, and publishing.
    From chami.com.

  2. Alleycode
Another free HTML/XHTML editior that has WYSIWYG capabilities and enhanced support for CSS. Worth a look.
    From Konae Technologies, Inc.

  3. Arachnophilia
This careware editor (Windows only) is absolutely free and definitely worth the download. A great editor to start with.
    From www.arachnoid.com.

  4. Macromedia Dreamweaver
This is my editor of choice without a doubt. It is the best thing out there and I am now using it exclusively for all my Web design work. It's not cheap, but if you've been looking for a good HTML editor this one will change your life. You can download a fully functional 30 day evaluation version (in either Mac or Windows) to check it out.
    From Macromedia, Incorporated.

  5. Adobe GoLive
An alternative to Dreamweaver is this strong contender from Adobe which provides similar features for the creation and management of Web sites. You can download a fully functional 30 day evaluation version (Mac or Windows) to check it out.
    From Adobe Systems Incorporated.

  6. Microsoft FrontPage
This is also a very popular Web creation/management tool, especially if you work in a totally Microsoft environment.
    From Microsoft Corporation.

Mac HTML Editors:

  1. Page Spinner
    From Optima System.
